Health Informatics education and applied research are difficult to separate. Some of our applied research interests stem from the need to solve immediate problems of a technical nature (e.g., connecting distinct information systems or devices that normally do not talk to one another). We encounter such problems on a regular basis in our explorations of relevant applications of information technology to healthcare. The solutions to these problems often provide us with valuable teaching resources and approaches.
