This course will introduce students to the philosophical discipline of ethical inquiry as it relates to the field of health care, health informatics and the health sciences in North America. An introduction to the major theoretical approaches to moral reasoning: consequentialism, non-consequentialism and rights theories will be explored through case-based analysis in which the benefits and challenges of these theories will be examined. Specific areas of inquiry will focus on general health care ethics such as, truth- telling, patient confidentiality and other bio-medical issues; information technology and privacy; and the business of health care managing the distribution of resources among other things. The final portion of the course will integrate these areas of inquiry challenging the student to examine the ethical issues arising from the comprehensive multi-professional inter-organizational environment in health care, health informatics and the health sciences.
